Welcome to a workshop on teaching and learning with Centre for the Advancement of University Teaching (CeUL).
Target group: university teachers who are already using or who are interested in using collaborative learning.
One of the recurring issues in higher education is how to create learning situations that activate, challenge and motivate the students. Sometimes it can be useful to combine traditional lectures and seminars with more interactive and collaborative forms of teaching, where the students get opportunities to work with more complex tasks in the form of scenarios, case studies or problem areas where theories and methods are applied and tested.
New rooms for active learning
One such learning environment that encompasses these affordances is the Active Learning Classroom. An ALC is furnished with tables that facilitate group interaction and each group has access to projection screens for collaborative work and presentations. Stockholm University is now building a number of ALCs for collaborative approaches to teaching, such as problem-based, inquiry-based or case-based teaching.
In the workshop you will get the opportunity to learn more about ALC, design teaching sequences for the ALC and also get first-hand experience of the ALC from the teacher’s as well as from the student’s perspective.
