The Department of Criminology conducts outstanding research in the core area of criminology.

Criminology is a field of social sciences and the Department of Criminology conducts research in a number of different areas such as crime development, criminal and drug policy, juvenile delinquency, corporate crime, recidivism and termination of crime, measures against crime, vulnerability and fear of crime.

Criminology

Criminology means the doctrine of crime. Criminology refers to both the crime itself, our view of it and its impact on and by society.

Crime trends

The extent of crime over time and space is one of the main areas of criminology and also something that the public has great interest in.

Criminal policy

Criminal policy is the object of analyses in criminology in the same way as other areas of politics are being studies in other disciplines. For example you can study the development of criminal policy in Sweden and the political reactions to crime.

Gender and crimes

Criminological research on gender and crime can be about both the causes of crime and exposure to crime. The differences between men and women's crime, vulnerability and insecurity are large and a gender perspective helps to understand this.

Life course criminology

Life course criminology is a collective concept that captures a research tradition that in the broadest sense is about studying individuals' lives over time.

Prison and other closed institutions

In addition to the prison, this research area includes institutions such as special youth homes and institutions with closed youth care or closed substance abuse care.

Victimology

In Victiomology research, we focus on the victim instead of the perpetrator. The subject provides in-depth knowledge of and increases the understanding of crime victims.
