Kickoff seminar for the research network The everyday life of urban monuments

Together with partners from Bristol, Amsterdam, Wroclaw, Stockholm and Copenhagen the Museum of Copenhagen are currently hosting an explorative network on The Everyday Life of Urban Monuments from 2024 to 2026.

Join us at the kickoffseminar of the May 7th 2024 at Copenhagen City Hall from 9 am to 16.30 followed by a monument walk-and-talk. The seminar is the first of a series of workshops held in Stockholm, Bristol and Amsterdam before the concluding conference at the University of Copenhagen in November 2025.

The keynote talk: The Works of Memorials will be delivered by professor Andrew M. Shanken from University of California, Berkeley based on his groundbreaking study The Everyday Life of Memorials from 2023. Other speakers include Mathias Danbolt, Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen; Charlotte Sprogøe Pedersen from KØS Museum of Art in Public Spaces and Jakob Ingemann Parby Københavns Museum / Museum of Copenhagen;  Moderators will be Tanja Schult Stockholm University of the Arts and Tim Cole University of Bristol.

The explorative research network The Everyday Life of Urban Monuments studies the interrelationship between monuments, cities and everyday practices. We are interested in the ideologies and functions envisioned in the monumentalization of cities as well as the reception and uses of individual monuments and monument assemblies by the general public over time. We are preoccupied with developing methodologies for tracing how the bodies of citizens and monuments interact and continuously cross-fertilize urban spaces with new meaning. And curious about the historical and geographical variations of this interaction.
