The application process for exchange students is different from that for other international students.
Please read the application procedure below.

There are two main ways to apply for an exchange to the Department of Geological Sciences:

  1. Centrally organized agreements – SU has a large number of bilateral exchange agreements with other universities worldwide and also participates in a number of exchange programs such as North2North, Erasmus+ CIVIS and Nordlys. All of these agreements are organized by the central SU exchange office. If you are interested in coming to our department via a centrally organized agreement then contact the central SU exchange office (exchange@su.se) for information on the application procedure.
  2. Erasmus+ departmental agreements – Only students from universities/departments that have an Erasmus exchange agreement with the Department of Geological Sciences at Stockholm University can apply. A list of our partner departments can be found in the end of this page.

3. If you are an international exchange coordinator and are interested in establishing a new Erasmus exchange agreement with our department contact exchange@geo.su.se.

4. If a viable agreement exists, students must apply for exchange positions at IGV through their home universities. Contact the international coordinator at your university for details about the application procedure.

5. When the home university has finished their selection, they will send nominations to our exchange coordinator (exchange@geo.su.se). Deadline for sending in nominations for autumn term is April 1, and for spring term September 15. Nominations must always come from the home university; we never accept applications directly from students.

6. After receiving nominations from partner universities, we will contact the students directly via e-mail and give instructions about how to apply. The application deadline is April 15 for the autumn term and October 1st for the spring term. You will be asked to submit official English translations of the transcripts of academic credits and official syllabuses for courses you have taken before or are taking at the time of appliaction, preferable in English.

7. Students will receive instructions on how to apply for accommodation at the end of May or October. Notice that we cannot guarantee accommodation for all incoming students. Read more here: housing for exchange students.

Courses in Geological Sciences

Our department has a broad selection of courses offered in English. Some courses on the basic level are only given in Swedish, so incoming exchange students usually have studied geological sciences for at least one year before coming to our department. Exchange students may choose freely among these courses, given that they have sufficient prerequisites for each course. A list of courses available for exchange students for the autumn term 2024 and spring 2025 with a preliminary guide to the prerequisites needed for eligibility can be found here. Distance learning courses are not normally available to exchange students.

Courses at other departments

Exchange students who come to Stockholm University via an agreement with the Department of Geological Sciences can also take courses at other departments, given that the special eligibility requirements are met, and that there are places available. Notice, however, that you will be expected to take the majority of your courses at our department.

Departmental websites (Notice that some courses are only listed on the department's websites)

If you find a course that is interesting, contact exchange@geo.su.se who will then forward your question to the department in question.

Courses in Swedish

All exchange students can take beginner or advanced level courses in the Swedish language.
