Through initiatives such as the Swedish Film Institute’s #5050x2020 campaign, Sweden has gained international recognition as a leading country when it comes gender and film. Yet, when looking closer at the work done on gender and sexuality in film and media within Sweden, and specifically Stockholm, we see a fragmented landscape divided along disciplinary and institutional lines.
This workshop aims to bridge those divides by placing research from multiple fields (including Child and Youth Studies, Art History, Cinema Studies and Gender Studies) in conversation with cultural practice. Combining scholarship from different departments at SU with practical work taking place in the Swedish cultural industry at various levels – from the leadership of the Swedish Film Institute to on the ground by filmmakers – we aim to establish a cross-disciplinary network across Stockholm University and build connections between work on gender and sexuality in the academic realm and the cultural industry in place in Stockholm.
