About us

The Department of Molecular Biosciences, The Wenner-Gren Institute (MBW) unites approximatley 30 independent research groups. Our mission is to carry out internationally recognized research and teaching in infection- and immunobiology, integrative biology and molecular cell biology.

All our researchers are united by the common goal of seeking answers to fundamental biological problems at the molecular level. Experimental rather than descriptive biology is at the heart of a broad range of internationally recognized research projects. In short, MBW scientists study the functions of genes and cells in tissues and organisms seeking core scientific truths and thereby contribute to solving the mysteries of life. Several research groups at MBW also participate in applied biomedical research initiatives via well-established collaborations with companies and healthcare organizations.

An international and dynamic research environment

MBW is located in the Arrhenius Laboratories on the northeastern end of Stockholm University's Frescati Campus. The department is highly international and contributes to a dynamic research and educational environment that is characterized by intense interactions and intellectual exchange with neighbouring research departments in natural sciences and mathematics.

History

The Department of Molecular Biosciences, The Wenner-Gren Institute (MBW) was officially launched on January 1, 2013, as a result of merging the Department of Genetics, Microbiology and Toxicology, the Department of Molecular Biology and Functional Genomics, and the Wenner-Gren Institute for Experimental Biology. MBW is housed in the Arrhenius Laboratories located at the northern end of the Frescati Campus of Stockholm University. Together with neighboring departments in biology and chemistry, MBW contributes to the strong tradition of academic excellence of the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University.
