Aims

The Department for Organic Chemistry shall actively, in an organized manner, works with environmental aspects, in order to achieve the general environmental targets, set forth by Stockholm University (see sustainable‐campus).

Targets

The Department of Organic Chemistry shall take on the responsibility for ensuring the minimal negative effects upon the environment possible in its activities, and thereby contribute to long‐term sustainable development.

The Department of Organic Chemistry shall

  • Follow laws and regulations so that our environmental work is in line with SU´s environmental goals and wherever possible follow standards higher than minimum requirements placed on us from SU´s.
  • Take on the responsibility for ensuring minimal negative effects on the environment in its activities, and thereby contribute to long‐term sustainable development.
  • Ensure that all personnel in the Department are educated in and motivated to carrying out their work in a responsible manner with regard to environmental aspects.
  • By a systematic environmental work we will prevent or reduce the overall negative impact on the environment.  
  • Consider environmental aspects in all our decisions. Research, teaching, administration, management and technical functions shall be characterized environmental awareness.
  • Continuously improve and evaluate our environmental work by regular controls.

So that we contribute to a sustainable development in the society

We do this by:

  • Continuously review measures to reduce the use of natural resources and the environmental impact of emissions to air, land and water that the activity directly or indirectly causes.
  • By ensuring environmentally safe laboratories.
  • By ensuring the correct handling, in regard to environmental aspects, of all garbage produced in the Department.
  • Work to ensure that aspects concerning the environment and sustainable development are weighed in decisions where relevant, e.g. when it comes to travel planning, purchasing and investment decisions

The program follows the guidelines given by SU and is based on the environmental policy formulated by the Department Board on the 17:th of February 2012 and that have been revised 2020.  

The program shall be implemented at a reasonable rate.

Structure

SU´s action plan includes several areas: Travels – Consumption – Chemical use and gas consumption – Waste and recycling – Buildings and premises – Education and Research.
The various areas shall not be viewed as separate, but all are connected.

In our department we will this year put most effort on travel and reduced energy and gas consumption.

Persons responsible for the various areas shall see to that cooperation between the latter is ensured by delegating and coordinating the tasks to be performed.
The most important contribution to improved environment comes in the personnel’s daily work.

Examination of the progress of the total program will be made once per year, at the time of the budgetary work.
The various intermediate targets will be monitored, coordinated, examined and reported and new targets will be formulated.
Persons responsible for each intermediate target will prepare the necessary numerical material and, together with the person responsible for the environmental work, write a report on the year's work.
The results, both positive and negative, are to be reported to the head of the Department.

Division of responsibilities

The Head of Departmental has the responsibility of ensuring that the environmental program is implemented and followed according to policies stated here.

Persons selected by the head of the Department are responsible for their allocated areas and the appropriate actions within these areas.

The environmental head has an obligation to follow the university’s environmental courses and information meetings and to keep the Department's personnel informed of matters arising from these activities.

The department RALV group deals with the green environment as part of several areas. The RALV group consists of the head of department, the environmental representative as well safety representative, a technical‐administrative staff, two doctoral students and a supervisor who participates in each meeting.

The personnel are responsible for implementing and following the environmental policy and the various actions decided in this, and shall participate in the Department's endeavors to become more environmentally minded.

It is everyone’s responsibility to take the waste down to floor 2 and deposit it in the relevant container. The following waste products may be disposed of outside the SU-shop on floor 2 (two different rooms):

  • Autoclaved material
  • Batteries – Small batteries
  • Corrugated cardboard – Flatten!
  • Corrugated cardboard and Paper packaging – Flattened corrugated cardboard, paper packaging. NOTE! soiled/dirty packaging is disposed of in the household waste
  • Domestic glass – Coloured or clear. Glass solvent bottles must be rinsed with water, dry and without any odour. The lab groups transport and throw away glass solvents bottles by themselves to the container recycle centre on floor 2.
  • Electronic waste – Discarded telephones, printers, screens and other electronic devices. Computers and other IT devises is handed in to Ola Andersson
  • Electric cables and cords
  • Household waste (combustible) – Soiled/ dirty paper- and plastic packaging, coloured paper, flower pots, plastic cutlery, candles, twine etc.
  • Lamp bulbs, low energy light bulbs, Fluorescent tubs – You can get help to replace them by Martin Roxengren.
  • Plastic – Hard and soft plastic packaging, as bottles, containers, bags, plastic wrapping, EPS cellular plastic and chips, etc. Solvent bottles/drums are to be emptied and solvent residue evaporated before throwing away.
  • Paper – Put printer paper, newspapers and brochures in the paper recycling box that you have in your office. When it’s full, empty it in the large green plastic containers which is located at both ends of the corridor. Do not put envelopes, notes with glue on etc for recycling in these containers. The “Lokal service” empties the containers. If you need to throw away a larger amount of paper, please collect an empty large plastic container at the recycle centre on floor 2.
  • Scrap metal – Examples are: aluminium foil, nails, hook of iron and solvent containers. Containers should be cleared of any solvent before throwing away.
  • Sorted combustible (mixed material) – Waxed paper, paper, binders, wood, plastic, ceramics, porcelain, stone, paper with glue on, folders, pencils, floppy disk, cd-cover, fabric, window glass etc.
  • Toner cartridges
  • Wood – Carpentry, wood, painted wood, masonite and plywood, etc.

Other

  • Refrigerators – Ask Martin Roxengren. Lab refrigerators or freezers will be handed as environmentally dangerous special garbage.
  • Furniture – Bring them down to floor 2 and put them in the assigned area or contact the distribution unit (phone 16 25 17, e-mail gods@su.se)
  • Domestic waste – At or after parties, those responsible for arranging the party are responsible for transporting away waste. Garbage bags should be tied shut and may be dumped in the garbage room M210b at KÖL.

Waste paper baskets: Put ordinary waste (other than the above) in the waste paper baskets, which are emptied by the cleaning staff.

Waste management at SU

Chemicals to be thrown away shall be put in the chemical store (A659) ”waste” cupboard, suitably labelled and packaged.

Crushed Lab Glass – OBS! ONLY LAB GLASS – A659, M210b. Throw your lab glass waste into the yellow box marked “glass waste”. To be sure that your glass box is full put on the lid and shake it hard a couple of times. Remove the lid and check if it is still full. If not, use it, shake it, use it and so on until it is really full. Only when it is really full, take the yellow box to ChemStore and take a new one.

Domestic glass – Coloured or clear. Glass solvent bottles must be rinsed with water, dry and without any odour. The lab groups transport/thrown away glass solvents bottles by them selves to the container recycle centre on floor 2.

Environmentally dangerous special garbage –

-Solvents must be put in separate containers or drums, sorted:

  • halogenated
  • non-halogenated

-Silica residue and filter residues shall be packed in boxes in black garbage bags.

-Polyethylene glycol (PEG) shall be stored in labelled containers.

When the above containers/boxes are full takes the persons working in laboratory out them from the waste cupboard and closes them. The waste will then be collected and marked with a special label of Martin Roxengren, who then transports the waste the Store for Environmentally Dangerous Materials at KÖL, which have open two times a week.

  • Acidic, alkaline, glues, Cd, Hg – sort separately.
  • Sb, As, Be, Tl – in one group
  • Ba, Pb, Co, Cu, Cr, Ni, Se, Ag, Sn, V, Zn, Pd, Ru– in one group
  • PCB – separately
  • Pesticides – separately
  • Other residual chemicals – label properly and pack suitably.

Put the sorted chemicals in the cupboard labelled ”waste” in the chemical store, with contents tightly packed and clearly
labelled. Martin Roxengren takes care of the handling from there.

Risk waste (sharp edged, pointed or biological) – Needles (also disposable syringes), razor blades or similar sharp objects: put into plastic flasks or jars. Put the closed full risk waste flask or jars in the rotavapour room. Martin Roxengren will collect them for transport to the Store for Environmentally Dangerous Materials at KÖL.

There is a zero-tolerance at Stockholm University when it comes to harassment, sexual harassment, victimization, other forms of misconduct and of course unethical scientific behavior.

Harassment and victimisation

Harassment is an act that violates someone's dignity and which relates to any of the grounds of discrimination sex, gender identity or expression, ethnicity, religion or other beliefs, disability, sexual orientation or age. Sexual harassment relates to interactions of sexual nature that violates someone's dignity.

Repeating actions that affect an individual negatively, excluding the person from the Community or have their opportunities to develop hampered, can be considered harassment under the discrimination law or mistreatment/bullying.

It is the person who feels exposed to negative actions that determine what is offensive; nevertheless, that person must make clear that the behavior is unwelcome, or that it is perceived as offensive.

If a manager of the university knows that an employee is being exposed to one of the above actions, the representative should make sure that the matter is investigated and measures are taken to ensure that those violations cease immediately.

What do you do if you experience discrimination?

If someone acts towards you in a way that you perceive as harassing, write down what happened, when it happened and where the incident took place. Then contact any employee whom you trust. At the Department of Organic Chemistry, you can contact your supervisor or the head of the department.

When you report harassment or victimization to someone at the department this person should as soon as possible inform the head of department. The head of department will then contact the Human Resources Department.

If you wish to seek assistance or to discuss what has happened before deciding whether you want an investigation to be started, begin by contacting the Work environment representative, your labor union or corporate health care.

Investigation and follow-up

When a suspected harassment is notified, individual interviews with the different parties involved will be held by the head of the department, the Director of the PhD program or Director of undergraduate studies in the case that the harassment took place during PhD student´s teaching, in order to determine what has happened. The process should be treated confidentially and quickly. The purpose of the investigation is to find out what has happened, and to ensure that any harassment or discrimination is terminated. The head of the department will coordinate further actions with the Human Resources Department.

Harassment or sexual harassment is investigated by the Human Resources Department. The case should be treated confidentially and quickly. The purpose of the investigation is to find out what has happened in order to terminate any harassment or sexual harassment.

If the investigation confirms that harassment or abusive discrimination has occurred, the head of department shall ensure that the behavior is terminated. Should this not be the case, the Human Resources Department must be contacted to take further actions.

Supervisor

As a supervisor you must send an email to ta@organ.su.se for the employee to whom the change in SUKAT and/or access card applies.

Extension

Check that an employment certificate is available for the extension period or that an extension for a fellow has been approved by the head of department.

Keep e-mail account

Supervisors can approve that the person who leaves can keep their e-mail address, i.e. be admitted as a guest in SUKAT for 3 months. If a longer time is desired, approval by the head of department is required.
