If you choose to study for a period abroad, there are different ways to proceed. You can study via one of the university's central exchange agreements, the department's own agreements or on your own. In any case, it is important to be out in good time, preferably one year before the study period at the partner university begins.

Central (university-wide) agreements and networks

As a student at Stockholm University, you have the opportunity to study one semester at one of the many partner universities around the world. There are university-wide (central) exchange agreements that can be applied for by students from all departments at Stockholm University. Central exchange programmes, agreements and networks as CIVIS Erasmus+, north2north and Nordlys are administered by the International office at Stockholm University..

Application instructions for exchange studies through the departmental agreements

An application for an exchange period is made in Mobility Online, a digital application form. The application has to be done within the specified application period.

The selection will be ready 2–4 weeks after the application deadline.

Your application must contain the following:

  • Completed application form (only open during application periods).
  • A personal letter in English where you describe who you are and why you want to go on exchange.

Application periods for the departmental agreements:

  • January 15–February 15 for an exchange during an autumn semester
  • August 15–September 15 for an exchange during a spring term

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to apply, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be registered as a program student at the Department of Physical Geography, Stockholm University.
  • Have studied for at least three semesters and at bachelor's level or two semesters at master's level before departure (note, two of the agreements are only for master's level, see the list of the institution's own agreements).
  • Be able to have your credits recognized after the exchange. You should agree with the exchange coordinator (or equivalent) at your institution on a preliminary selection of courses that can be credited before applying.
  • Intend to obtain a degree from Stockholm University

Selection criteria

The applications are assessed based on the following criteria:

  • Complete application. In the first instance, students who have submitted a complete application on time are nominated. Incomplete application documents and/or supplements are handled if there is space.
  • Previous exchange studies. Students who have not participated in exchange studies at Stockholm University before have priority. You cannot be nominated to an institution where you have previously been an exchange student.
  • Suitability. We assess your suitability as an ambassador for Stockholm University and your ability to adapt to the foreign environment based on your personal letter.
  • Study results. We look at the number of completed credits in the last year in relation to the number of credits the student has been registered for. If the previous criteria are not sufficient to make a selection, we also look at grades for courses in natural sciences.

If you pay tuition fee for your master’s studies, or have a scholarship, then consult with the Swedish Migration Agency before going abroad on your own/exchange studies through Stockholm University. Please note, there is a risk that the Swedish Migration Agency may withdraw your residence permit for studies if you do not stay in Sweden during your master’s studies. Exchange studies that are conducted at another university, outside Sweden, do not fulfil the full-time studies requirement for a residence permit.

If you plan to do one or more semesters of exchange studies during your programme at Stockholm University, you should only apply for a residence permit for the time you plan to study in Sweden. During the exchange semester you might need a residence permit in the country where you are going to study. In this case you should contact the authorities in that country to find out what is required.
