Gia Destouni elected as a member of the Academy of Athens

Gia Destouni, Professor of Hydrology and Water Resources at Stockholm University, has been elected as a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens.

My research interests include hydroclimate, water resource availability and security, diffuse pollution of water in the environment, and the interactions and shifts of water resources with climate change and various human activity developments, says Gia Destouni.

About Gia Destouni

Today, Gia Destouni is a Professor of Hydrology and Water Resources at Stockholm University, and a Guest Professor of Engineering Hydrology at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, in Stockholm.

She earned her diploma (MSc) in Civil Engineering in 1987 from the Faculty/School of Civil Engineering, KTH (Royal Institute of Technology) of Sweden, and completed her PhD in 1991 in Hydraulics Engineering at the Department of Hydraulics Engineering of the same Faculty. She was awarded the Swedish title of Docent in 1993 (corresponding to the rank of Associate Professor).

She is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, and the US National Academy of Engineering, and a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and of the Stellenbosch Institute of Advanced Study in South Africa.

She has been awarded the Henry Darcy Medal of the European Geosciences Union, the Swedish Sigge Thernwall Grand Prize for sustainability research, and H.M. The King's Medal for ”outstanding contributions in water and climate research” in Sweden.

Her various leadership positions and commissions of trust include, among others, being Editor in Chief of the AGU journal Water Resources Research, member of the Council of Trustees of WWF Sweden, Head of the Department of Physical Geography at Stockholm University, Secretary General of The Swedish Research Council Formas, and Vice President of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS).
