Eddy is a teacher, researcher and newly appointed professor at Fysikum

Eddy Ardonne comes from the province of Zeeland in the south-west of the Netherlands. He obtained his Master's degree at Leiden University and Phd in Amsterdam. After being a Postdoc in the US for five years, he joined Nordita and then came to Fysikum in 2012. Until this year, he has been teaching in parallel with his research. In August 2024, the President promoted him to Professor of Condensed Matter Theory.

From postdoctoral researcher in the USA to senior lecturer at Fysikum

From 2002 to 2007, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the United States at the University of Illinois and the California Institute of Technology. He was also assigned to quantum computing at Microsoft Station Q.
"When Nordita moved from Copenhagen to Stockholm in 2007, I was a guest lecturer there. From 2012 to 2024, I have been a senior lecturer in the basic science year in subjects such as physics, electricity, principles of quantum physics and mathematical methods, and other courses."

Research with an emphasis on quantum physics

In terms of research, Eddy has focused on systems with quantum effects where electrons interact strongly with each other.

"In these systems, interesting particles can arise. A very simplified analogy would be a pattern of rectangular bricks, which have holes that appear to be half bricks."

When he was a postdoc, he often worked with mathematicians.
"We talked for two years to understand each other's points of view. Once we understood each other's language, it was very beneficial and led to several research papers. It works well to run programmes on the
the computer cluster located here at AlbaNova."

Professor of Condensed Matter Theory

In August, Eddy was promoted to Professor of Condensed Matter Theory specialising in strongly correlated quantum systems. He is married to Maria Hermans and they met during their studies, although they spent many years in different countries. They now live in Solna outside Stockholm and have two children.
"During the summer I cycle to and from work. When there is time and opportunity, I will start skydiving again."

Eddy Ardonne's advice to physics students

"Choose the part of physics that you like best. It's important to do what you enjoy and to keep it as a starting point. It may make it more difficult to continue in physics, but it gives you more for yourself. It is also useful to explain the physics and discuss with each other because it is very important to know what you have not understood. Then you know what you need to learn."
