Toppling the Statues of Favorinus and Demetrius of Phalerum
Seminar

Time: 16.00 – 17.30
Location: Room C512 and online*
Denis Searby, Professor of Ancient Greek
Favorinus (ca. 80-160), writer of the Second Sophistic, is attributed authorship of the Corinthian Speech in the corpus of Dio Chrysostom. There is scholarly consensus on this, but the arguments are based solely on internal criteria. A reference to an author of a Corinthian speech is found in a collection of sayings in cod. Vat. gr. 1144. I argue that a reference to an author of a Corinthian speech in this is a unique external reference to Favorinus as author of the speech.
