Examination

Here you will find information about examination registration, placement in examination halls, examination rules, and other issues related to examination management at the Department of Romance Studies and Classics. 

For all on-campus exams and for some take-home exams, anonymous correction is applied. This means the teacher sets grades without knowing who the student is. For these examination sessions, registration via Ladok student.ladok.se is compulsory. When you register, you will receive a personal code as a receipt of your registration.

Digital examinations conducted remotely with live streaming at the Department of Romance Studies and Classics adhere to the University’s rules for digital examinations conducted by live streaming (in Swedish).

Equipment and Preparation

  • As a student enrolled in an online course, you are responsible for ensuring you have the necessary technical equipment and a stable internet connection.
  • For remote digital exams with live streaming, you will need a computer with internet access and a microphone, as well as an external camera.
  • If your camera fails during the exam, or your screen turns black for any other reason, your exam will be automatically deemed invalid, and you will need to retake it during the next exam session.
  • Headphones are only allowed during listening comprehension exams.
  • It is important that you test your seating position and webcam placement in advance to ensure it resembles the setup shown in the image below. Be sure to do this well in advance; we strongly advise against last-minute preparations on exam day. If unsure, take a picture of your setup and send it to the Student Affairs Office (expedition.romklass@su.se) for assessment.

Before the Exam: ID-check and Screen Name

  • Sign in at least 30 minutes before the start of the exam. The Zoom-link for the exam will be posted under the “Plans” section on the Athena course page.
  • Have your ID ready when signing in. During the digital exam, your personal data will be processed through an ID-check conducted by an exam invigilator. The invigilator will ask you to show your ID in a private Zoom-room where no other students are present. Acceptable forms of ID include driver’s licenses, passports, or a National ID Card. The ID must be valid.
  • Use your full name (first and last name) as your Zoom screen name.

During the Exam: How Remote Digital Exams work

  • Digital exams are conducted using the Zoom video conferencing tool in combination with the Itslearning/Athena exam feature. After showing your face and your ID to the invigilator, close all other applications and web windows on your computer. The external webcam must be positioned diagonally behind you so that the invigilators can monitor your activities and view your screen at all times. The external webcam must be connected to your computer. Alternatively, you can use your phone or tablet with Zoom. Your microphone must remain turned on throughout the exam along with your camera.
  • Books, papers, phones, or other items, are not allowed on the desk beside your computer – only drinks and refreshments are permitted. The setup must look like this:

  • The exam will appear under “Plans” on the Athena course page once it starts, provided you have registered for the exam in Ladok. The invigilator will announce the exam password verbally (via microphone) when the exam becomes visible.
  • If you need to ask the invigilator a question or report a toilet break, you must do so via microphone. The Zoom chat function will be disabled. You must keep the Athena page open on your screen throughout the exam.
  • You will be able to navigate between questions in the exam, including going back to previous questions. Once you have entered the password for the exam, the exam timer will begin. Be sure to keep an eye on the time!

Please note the following:

  • Any suspected cheating will be reported to the Director of Studies and may result in disciplinary action.
  • Invigilators will record any suspicious behavior, such as opening other web pages or using your mobile phone during the exam. They may also use Zoom’s “pin” tool to switch to full-screen mode for individual students.

You register for examination via Ladok. Use your university account to log in to student.ladok.se and select “Current education”, where you can see which examinations are open for registration. You are not allowed to undergo the examination if you did not sign up in advance. However, for some take-home exams, no registration is required.

Central Examination Services

Three weeks (15 working days) after the examination date, you will see your grade in Ladok student.ladok.se. Corrected on-campus examinations can be ordered from the Student Office

Take-home exams are not available at the Student Office; these can only be retrieved from the responsible teacher. 

The procedures for take-home exams are a little different, and it is therefore important that you check with your course coordinator about what instructions apply to your particular course. 

If you have received a failing grade, you must either resit the examination or supplement it in order to be able to get a passing grade. Please note that supplementation applies only in the case of take-home exams, not on-campus exams. The possibility of supplementation is stated in the course syllabus. If supplementation is possible, you must follow the instructions provided by the teacher on the corrected exam. To resit an examination, you must re-register for the relevant resit session.
If you have received a passing grade on your examination but missed something or were absent for certain compulsory modules of a class, you should contact the responsible teacher as soon as possible to get instructions on what you need to do to compensate for your absence. Your grade will not be reported in Ladok until you have submitted compensatory assignments or otherwise compensated for the obligations you failed to fulfil.
If you must to resit a take-home exam, you must contact the course coordinator for information about the next resit session.

 

You can apply to transfer credits you have already earned in a similar education programme. You must be a student at Stockholm University, and thus admitted to a course, in order to apply. The fact that you apply does not automatically mean that your credit transfer request will be approved. Contact your study counsellor for further information about how to apply.

The processing time for credit transfers is about 1-2 months. At the start and end of the semester, we have an especially high workload. You will be notified of the decision in writing. Credit transfer decisions can be appealed.

At the Department of Romance Studies and Classics, we want students to be engaged in their education. 
The department’s Student Council protects the interests of students enrolled here, and also has representatives on the Department Board. The main task of the Student Council is to act as the student’s own tool when it comes to expressing opinions on issues both great and small.

Stockholm University Student union (SUS) is the largest of the three student unions and represents almost all students. They organize students who want to influence their education and represent students' interests when the university makes various decisions. You can participate in or arrange various events and activities through union associations and student/PhD student councils.

If you have problems connected to your education, the ombud on SUS provides support regarding student rights and student influence during an investigation or if you just want information. The ombud exist to offer information about students' rights and obligations. This applies to both disciplinary matters and questions regarding your education. The ombud do not represent students and do not attend meetings, but provide them with information before these meetings.

A responsible and ethical approach and actions are part of good scientific practice and are part and parcel of education at the Department of Romance Studies and Classics. That is why we have developed a Code of Conduct.

The Department of Romance Studies and Classics is located in Södra Huset on Campus Frescati. Some of the classrooms and seminar rooms are located adjacent to our department, on Floors 4 and 5 of Buildings B and C (Södra Huset).

With some exceptions, university premises are indicated by letters followed by three digits. The letters and the first digit indicate the building and floor where the premises are located. The next two digits specify the room in question.
