Reglindis De Ridder

Reglindis De Ridder first joined Stockholm University in 2018 when she conducted postdoc research into audiovisual translation into Dutch for Belgian children. In 2020, she started working as a lecturer at the department's Dutch and German section. Her research interests lie in sociolinguistics, Dutch studies and audiovisual translation studies.

In her hometown Brussels, she explored the status of her non-dominant, native language variety vis-a-vis its dominant counterpart, more specifically in translation. Subsequently, she moved to the UK and Ireland to delve into audiovisual translation. In Ireland, she conducted doctoral research on the Flemish public service broadcaster’s subtitling policy relating to the use of Belgian and Netherlandic Dutch. In Ireland, the story of Gaeilge (Irish), once the majority language now a “definitely endangered” minority language, triggered her interest in minority and minoritized languages. When she got a postdoc position at Stockholm University, she learned about the linguistic situation in Sweden, where not only territorially linked languages (Finnish, Meänkieli and Sami), but also not-territorially languages (Romani Ćhib and Yiddish) are official minority languages. She continued to study audiovisual translation from a sociolinguistic perspective. With her colleagues at the Dutch section, she also worked on a corpus and multimodal analysis of an animated series’ audiovisual translation in Dutch and Swedish focussing on gender and agency. In 2023, she edited the open access volume “One size fits all”? Linguistic standards in the media of pluricentric language areas with contributions relating to different minoritized language areas and their representation in different media. 

Public engagement is very important to her. Because of her expertise in Dutch dubbing for children, she has been consulted on several occasions by media advisors of the Flemish Government following a parliamentary question about dubbing and led negotiations with Netflix and Disney+ about the language versions they offer. Similarly, she has been invited to join panels and hold talks about audiovisual translation and minoritized language areas. More recently, she joined the translation studies think tank of the official Dutch language planning body, Nederlandse Taalunie.
