About us

The Department of Special Education at Stockholm University is unique in its kind as Sweden's only educational department dedicated exclusively to special education.

Special education - an interdisciplinary subject.

The researchers at the department have a background in several various disciplines, such as didactics, psychology, pedagogy, sociology, speech therapy and occupational therapy.

A scientific subject, special education deals with conditions for participation and learning from the perspective of society, organization, group and the individual.

After a merger with the Teacher University College, the Department of Special Education formed in 2008.

The department was formed at Stockholm University on January 1, 2008 when Stockholm University and the Stockholm University Teacher University College merged.

Prior to that, special education was placed at the Department of Individual, External and Learning.

Up to and including 2007, the department's doctoral students defendend their theses in pedagogy, but from 2008 Stockholm University is the only university in Sweden that has postgraduate education in the subject of special education.

In the spring of 2022, the Department of Special Education will move to new premises in the newly built Albano area located at Norra Djurgården.
