Research subjects

The Department of Statistics has a tradition of research in applied statistics. Internationally well-known names such as Gustav Sundbärg, Erland Hofsten and Tore Dalenius have worked at the department.

As the Department of Statistics belongs to the Faculty of Social Sciences, our research largely takes place within applied statistics. Our research is useful for other social science disciplines such as sociology, demography, criminology, economics and cultural geography.

As early as 1903, Gustav Sundbärg was appointed associate professor of statistics at the then Stockholm University. Later, Erland Hoffsten and Tore Dalenius also worked at the department.

Research subjects

Bayesian Inference

Bayesian inference grew up and was the dominant form of statistical inference in the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, with known representatives such as Laplace, Borel and Keynes.

Design and analysis of experiments

Experiments are used to investigate a research question and possibly to prove a causal relationship. They are used in a number of areas, for example in medicine and in the manufacturing industry but are getting more and more common in behavioural sciences and in economy.

Official Statistics

The research area comprises all aspects of production of official statistics and similar types of statistics.

Statistical models in the social sciences

This theme is an umbrella for a number of research areas in statistical models and associated method, with applications (mostly) in the social sciences.

Time series analysis

When measuring a variable periodically in time, the observations form a time series. Unlike many other areas in statistics, time series analysis is no more than around 100 years old.
