Seminar - Irby Lovette

In connection with Ingo Müller’s Ph.D. defence, the opponent, Professor Irby Lovette (https://ecologyandevolution.cornell.edu/irby-j-lovette), will give a talk titled “Genomic Explorations of the Speciation Process in Birds.” Professor Lovette is the Fuller Professor of Ornithology, Senior Director for Academic Affairs, and Director of the Fuller Evolutionary Biology Program at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Irby uses genomic data to study individual dispersal, population-level gene flow, hybridization, and speciation.

Abstract
One of the surprises of the genomic era of speciation research involves the great diversity of pathways to differentiation taken by different lineages, often in more complex and intriguing ways than we might have earlier suspected. Here I will use ongoing work in our lab group at Cornell to cover examples of processes like mosaic speciation, differentiation in spite of ongoing gene flow, and the evolution of local adaptation, in birds like seedeaters, orioles, sparrows, and others. I will argue that one collective take-home message from these studies and equivalent work being done around the world is that many evolutionary processes are not as neat and tidy as theory and phenotypes might have led us to predict, yet within this complexity lies wonderful opportunities to gain a far more informed understanding of the processes that generate biological diversity.
