Stockholm University researchers in Nobel Committees

Several professors at Stockholm University are members of the award committes appointing the Nobel Laureates.

The work of appointing the Nobel laureates in chemistry and physics and the economics laureate is led by three award committees at the Royal Academy of Sciences (KVA). Several of Stockholm University's researchers are part of the committees that appoint the laureates for the Nobel Prize and the Prize in economic science in memory of Alfred Nobel. In the committee for the Economics prize, both the chairman and the secretary are professors at Stockholm University, and the committee secretary for the prize in chemistry is a professor at Stockholm University. Additional researchers at the university are part of the committees at KVA or members of the Swedish Academy, which appoints the literature laureates.

The Nobel Committee for Chemistry

Peter Brzezinski, Professor in Biochemistry at Stockholm University, is secretary of the Chemistry Committee. Xiaodong Zou, Professor of Inorganic and Structural Chemistry, is member of the committee.

 

The Nobel Committee for Physics

Over the years, many physicists at Stockholm University have been members of the Nobel Committee for Physics. For long periods, professors at Stockholm University have also held the important post of secretary in the committee. At the moment, however, no researcher at the university is included in the committee.

 

The Nobel Committee for Literature at the Swedish Academy

Anders Olsson, Professor Emeritus of Literature at Stockholm University is chairman of the Swedish Academy’s Nobel Committee for Literature. Tomas Riad, Professor of Scandinavian Languages, and Åsa Wikforss, Professor of Theoretical Philosphy, are two of the eighteen voting members of the Swedish Academy.

 

The Economic Sciences Prize Committee

Jakob Svensson and Per Krusell are chairman and secretary respectively of the committee for the Prize in economic science in memory of Alfred Nobel. Both are professors at the Institute for International Economics (IIES), Stockholm University. The committee also includes from Stockholm University John Hassler, professor at IIES; Timo Boppart, professor at the University of Zurich and lecturer at IIES, and Jan Teorell, professor at the Department of Political Science.

 

 

Nobel Laureates from Stockholm University

Four scientists from Stockholm University have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, whilst another has received the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel (Economy Prize).
