This seminar is centered around research investigating how knowledge about New World fauna of Portuguese America was described, organized, and disseminated in the 16th century, through a philological analysis of texts by chroniclers and missionaries.
The research analyzes authors such as Thevet, Gandavo, and Cardim, the study highlights the colonial production of zoological knowledge and the influence of indigenous cosmologies on early modern natural history.
