Supporting doctoral students’ writing
Writing is a central part of research, and doctoral students may need support to become competent academic writers. We now offer a workshop where research supervisors can gain perspectives and ideas on how to support doctoral students' writing, along with tools that can be used in supervision.
Welcome to a professional development workshop on enhancing research supervision, organised by the Centre for the Advancement of University Teaching (CeUL).
Who is the workshop for?
This workshop is aimed at those who supervise doctoral students at Stockholm University, Karolinska Institutet, and KTH, who wish to develop in their role as research supervisors and are interested in how they can support doctoral students’ writing. The workshop is also open to programme directors responsible for doctoral education at their departments.
About the workshop
Writing is a central part of research across all disciplines, and developing as a writer is an essential aspect of doctoral education. However, it is not uncommon for doctoral students to struggle with writing, and they may find it challenging to grasp the unspoken disciplinary norms and expectations for academic texts. During this workshop, we will reflect on and discuss writing and the writing process from social and disciplinary perspectives, including topics such as co-authorship, compilation theses, and monographs, and what these may imply for writing.
We will start by exploring different perspectives on writing in relation to skills, process, and identity. In the latter part of the workshop, we will introduce and discuss practical tools that you, as a supervisor, can use to support doctoral students' writing.

Preparations and literature
- Bring a text from your research field that you consider to be a good example.
- Reflect on the challenges that doctoral students may encounter with writing in your discipline.
Registration
The workshop is aimed at all teaching staff and educational managers, regardless of subject affiliation, at Stockholm University. Participation is free of charge. Book your place in good time, as places are limited. First come, first served is applied.
