Biology Books Worth Reading

What can a novel about forests, genes or evolution offer an aspiring biologist? Probably more than you’d expect. At BIG, we’d like to share some of our favourite book recommendations, both fiction and non-fiction, that in different ways connect to biology, nature and life’s big questions.

Many of us who work at BIG are keen readers, and in coffee break chats and corridor conversations we often come back to novels, essays and popular science books that touch on what lies at the very heart of biology: life, nature and our place in the world. Fiction, in particular, can offer fresh perspectives on biological questions, spark empathy, imagination and critical thinking, and sometimes even help us see science in an entirely new light.

Here, we’ve gathered our biology-related reading tips for you as students. You’ll find both non-fiction that deepens your understanding and fiction that brings biology to life through stories, characters and settings. We hope you’ll find something that inspires both your curiosity and your love of reading, wherever you are in your studies.

Fiction

Here you’ll find novels and short stories where biology finds its way into the narrative, sometimes at the centre, sometimes more subtly in the background. Fiction can offer new perspectives on nature, scientific research and humanity’s relationship with the living world.

Spanning stories from the nineteenth century to the present, Ship Fever is a collection of short stories in which many of the central characters are biologists, naturalists and researchers. Andrea Barrett brings scientific curiosity and discovery to life through stories about fieldwork, expeditions and the personal lives behind scientific work. The result is a thoughtful and engaging portrait of science as a human endeavour, shaped by ambition, uncertainty and fascination with the natural world.

Set on the fossil-rich shores of Lyme Regis in early nineteenth-century England, Remarkable Creatures follows Mary Anning, the self-taught fossil collector whose discoveries of marine reptiles helped transform scientific thinking. As extraordinary fossils emerge from the cliffs, the novel explores how these finds began to challenge established ideas about the Earth’s history and the development of life. Chevalier weaves together science, friendship and social barriers in a story about curiosity, perseverance and the excitement of discovery.

In the novel Flight Behavior, Barbara Kingsolver brings climate change and ecology into a deeply personal story set in rural Appalachia. When a vast swarm of monarch butterflies unexpectedly appears on a mountainside, it sparks both scientific curiosity and concern among the local community. Through the encounters between researchers, residents and the natural world, the novel explores efforts to understand and protect a fragile overwintering site – and reflects on how global environmental change touches both ecosystems and human lives.

The Last Wild Horses is a powerful and haunting novel that lingers long after the final page. Through its sensitive portrayal of species conservation, vulnerability and the complex bond between humans and animals, it weaves together intimate personal stories with broader ecological questions. The book is part of Maja Lunde’s Climate Quartet, which also includes The History of Bees, Blue and The End of the Ocean, four compelling novels that together form a deeply moving exploration of our relationship with nature in a rapidly changing world.

Where the Crawdads Sing is a novel where wetland ecosystems, animal behaviour and a deep connection to nature shape both the main character and the story. It offers a poetic and thought-provoking portrayal of the bond between humans and the natural world.

In Magnificent Rebels, Andrea Wulf explores a circle of thinkers in Jena around 1800 who, in different ways, helped shape our modern understanding of nature, science and humanity. Through figures such as Goethe, Schiller and the Humboldt brothers, philosophy, poetry and natural science are woven together into a compelling story about the power of ideas. For biologists in particular, the book is especially engaging as it shows how the concept of nature as an interconnected system emerged, an idea that still influences ecological and evolutionary thinking today.

Non-fiction

Here we recommend books that explore and explain biological phenomena, from the level of cells to entire ecosystems. Perfect if you want to broaden your knowledge or discover new areas within biology.

In A Life on Our Planet, David Attenborough reflects on more than 70 years as a nature broadcaster and advocate for the natural world. Drawing on his own experiences, he describes how the Earth’s ecosystems have changed during his lifetime and how human activity has affected global biodiversity. For biologists in particular, the book offers a unique combination of personal testimony and scientific insight, providing a compelling account of global environmental change from ecological and systems-oriented perspectives.

In her essay collection Notes from a Summer Cottage, Nina Burton explores what life is and where its boundaries lie, through a blend of biology, philosophy and literature. Moving between cell biology, memory research and dreams, she shows how scientific questions can also carry profound existential dimensions. For biologists, the book offers an alternative way of approaching fundamental biological questions, beyond the framework of standard course literature.

In this classic environmental work, Rachel Carson shows how pesticides affect ecosystems and biodiversity. The book helped spark the modern environmental movement and remains highly relevant for anyone who wants to understand the relationship between human impact and the vulnerability of nature.

Niklas Janz and Sören Nylin explore how scientific knowledge is produced, evaluated and communicated. Drawing on examples from evolutionary biology and ecology, the book connects ideas from the philosophy of science with how research works in practice. In an age of disinformation, it highlights trust, critical thinking and scientific methods as essential for understanding the world.

In this vivid biography, Andrea Wulf tells the story of Alexander von Humboldt – one of the most influential scientists of the nineteenth century. He is yet surprisingly little known today, at leasst here in Sweden. Following his expeditions, ideas and encounters with other thinkers of his time, the book shows how Humboldt’s vision of nature as an interconnected system helped shape modern ecology and environmental thinking. The result is an engaging portrait of a scientist whose ideas still influence how we understand the natural world.
