TRACEE – A Transdisciplinary Master’s Program for a Sustainable Future

Climate change, energy transitions, and environmental crises demand new ways of thinking and working. TRACEE is a transdisciplinary master’s program that equips students with the tools to analyze and solve global sustainability challenges. Through international mobility and specialized study tracks, they receive a unique and comprehensive education.

In the fall of 2025, the European university alliance CIVIS, which includes eleven leading research universities across Europe—among them Stockholm University—will launch a groundbreaking master’s program in transdisciplinary studies of climate, environment, and energy. TRACEE, an acronym for Transdisciplinary Studies of Climate, Environment, and Energy, addresses some of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change, energy transitions, and environmental crises.

What Makes the TRACEE Program Unique?

This innovative master’s program integrates knowledge and methodologies from the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and law to educate future problem-solvers who can transcend disciplinary boundaries and collaboratively develop holistic solutions to global challenges. The program’s mobility components allow students to explore new academic environments, broaden their multicultural perspectives, and build international networks.

Program Structure

Students begin their studies at Stockholm University with a joint semester (30 ECTS credits) designed to provide a broad understanding of climate, environment, and energy. By integrating insights from the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities, they will learn to analyze complex systems, explore transdisciplinary perspectives, and develop methods for generating new knowledge.

After this initial semester, students can specialize by choosing one of several study tracks offered at other CIVIS universities (two semesters, equivalent to 60 ECTS credits). The study tracks launching in fall 2025 include:

  • Environmental Humanities and Law (Paris Lodron University of Salzburg & University of Bucharest)
  • Environmental Social Sciences (University of Glasgow & University of Bucharest)
  • Environmental Geoscience (University of Glasgow & Aix-Marseille University)
  • Environmental Risk and Mitigation (University of Lausanne & Sapienza University of Rome)
  • Transdisciplinary Approaches to Climate Change (Paris Lodron University of Salzburg & Université libre de Bruxelles)
  • Global Change Biology (Sapienza University of Rome & Aix-Marseille University)

During the fourth semester, students undertake a master’s thesis at the university within their chosen study track that best aligns with their interests. This thesis project (30 ECTS credits) aims to apply newly acquired skills in a real-world context. Throughout the entire program, a transdisciplinary course stream provides continuous support for students in developing their own projects, serving as a hub for collaboration and knowledge exchange.

In the fall of 2025, six specialized study tracks within TRACEE will open.

Career Opportunities for Future Green Leaders

Graduates of TRACEE will be experts in the green transition, well-prepared for careers in government agencies, NGOs, or international corporations. The program also provides a strong foundation for pursuing doctoral studies in transdisciplinary research fields.
