Abstract
In 1717, a selection of Carl Gyllenborg’s letters was reproduced in the press. A Swedish backed plot in favour of the Jacobite movement was thence widely presumed to have been uncovered, but the published correspondence hardly scratched the surface of a transnational network operating on the European mainland. This paper presents my PhD project, which unearths Jacobite communication networks across early eighteenth-century Europe and examines how its actors enabled and contributed to the communication, reform and sustenance of Jacobite hidden transcripts and ideology through primarily clandestine non-state diplomacy and the production and dissemination of (printed) propaganda. In this paper I will give special attention to the maturation of certain ideological concepts of Jacobitism, their practical public or diplomatic communication, and how shifts in the Jacobite diaspora and Europe’s political landscape allowed for new alliances.
