International Law and the Rules-Based Order: Past, Present, Future

International law is not “dead”—but it may be changing. We are living through what may prove to be a period of profound transformation in international affairs. Multiple crises and structural shifts are unfolding simultaneously, challenging established institutions, norms, and expectations about global governance. As many commentators argue, we may be living through a hinge moment in history—on par with 1918, 1945, or 1989—when a new international system is taking shape.
This event examines what these developments may mean for international law. The discussion will situate the current moment in historical context, exploring not only how international law has evolved through previous hinge moments in history, but also how international law differs from what is often called the “rules-based order”. In light of current pressures, how may both international law and the rules-based order now be changing? And what could this mean for the future of international affairs?
