In case you get ill

As an international student you are entitled to use the Swedish healthcare system. How much you will have to pay depends, among other things, on which country you are from and how long you will be studying here. On this page you can read more about how to get healthcare in Sweden.

 

1177 – national health advice number

Call 1177 (with a foreign number +46 771-11 77 00) to speak to a nurse who will help you assess your symptoms, offer you advice and guide you to the right clinic if necessary. Medical advice is offered in English around the clock, and several other languages during specific hours. You only pay for the cost of the call.

Local healthcare clinic (Vårdcentral)

The local “vårdcentral” is the first choice when you need to see a medical professional. Here you can book an appointment with a general practitioner, specialist nurse, counsellor or psychologist. You are free to make your choice among the health care clinics in Stockholm.

 

112 – emergency number

112 is Sweden's emergency number. You call 112 in the event of a serious accident or illness for which you require emergency services such as an ambulance. Always call 112 if you believe the condition to be life-threatening. 

 

Emergency care

Emergency department at the hospital (Akutmottagning)

Hospital emergency departments are for people with extremely serious or life threatening illnesses and injuries. They are the ones who are prioritized in the emergency department. You may have to wait longer if your condition is less serious.

Local emergency clinic (Närakut)

Local emergency clinics are for injuries and illnesses that cannot wait. They are open every day 8 am – 10 pm and there are several local emergency clinics within the county.

 

Emergency psychiatric care – around the clock

If you need urgent psychiatric help you can go to “Psykiatriska akutmottagningen” (The emergency psychiatric clinic) located at St Göran Hospital, adress Vårdvägen 5. It's open all days, around the clock.

 

Sexual health

If you need contraception, are pregnant or want to check if you have a sexually transmitted disease – get in touch with one of Stockholm's midwifery clinics.

If you are worried or have concerns about sexuality, sexual health or your gender there are several sexual health clinics in Stockholm that offer advice and support.

 

Dental care

If you need to seek dental care, please visit a dental clinic.

Public health dentists on emergency duty are found at Folktandvården, Fleminggatan 48, metro station Fridhemsplan.

Dental care is not fully subsidized and, therefore, relatively expensive in Sweden.

Rights, fees and insurance

If you come from another country and become ill during a temporary visit to Sweden, you are always entitled to receive essential healthcare. How much you will have to pay depends, among other things, on your citizenship and how long you will be studying in Sweden. In some cases, you have to pay the full cost yourself.

If you have a Swedish personal identity number you are entitled to healthcare at the same standard patient fees as Swedes. You can register for a Swedish personal identity number if you are admitted to a study programme that will last longer than 12 months.

Insurance

All students in Sweden, regardless of nationality, have insurance during schoolhours, covered by the Swedish State's Insurance for students at Swedish universities through Kammarkollegiet.

Stockholm university and other associated colleges provides additional insurance to certain student groups. Contact your institution for more information about what applies for you.

If you are a student from another college associated with Stockholm Student Health Services please contact your institution for guidance.

 

If you have CSN student finance

If you get sick and have student finance via CSN, you have to notify CSN and provide an illness report to “Försäkringskassan” (the Swedish Social Insurance Agency). Doing so, you can keep your student finance and CSN can take any illness into consideration when the results of your education are verified.
