Eva Maria Hardtmann Associate Professor

Eva-Maria Hardtmann is Associate Professor of Social Anthropology at Stockholm University. She has been working on issues relating to social movements, political anthropology and gender in South Asia, more specifically the Dalit movement, including the collaboration with Burakumin activists in Japan and internationally in relation to UN. She is presently working on the contemporary prison abolition movement in the U.S. and also on the pioneering prison abolition movement in Sweden in the 1960s and 1970s. Hardtmann is the author of the two monographs, The Dalit Movement in India: Local Practices, Global Connections (Oxford University Press, 2009) and South Asian Activists in the Global Justice Movement (Oxford University press, 2017). She is member of the editorial board of Contemporary Voice of Dalit (Sage Publication) and Caste: A Global Journal on Social Exclusion (Brandeis University) and has contributed with articles in Anthropologie et Sociétés, Kritisk etnografi and chapters in volumes published with Routledge Curzon, Palgrave and Berghahn Books, including a chapter in The Oxford Handbook of Caste. Hardtmann is further the editor of the two Swedish volumes Berättelsen på min rygg (Ordfront, 2006), short-stories by Dalit authors and Detta land som aldrig var vår moder (Tranan, 2006), poetry and art by Dalit poets and a Dalit artist.
