The research area focuses on improved understanding of how stress-related illnesses and health problems arise and can be prevented in and outside of the workplace.

About me

My major research field is epidemiology of neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly and of cardiovascular disease in middle age. My specific research interests are: (1) influence of lifestyle (smoking, vitamin B12 and folate, social network, and leisure activities) and psychosocial factors (personality, work stress, life-course cognitive reserve enhancing factors) and their interactions with genetic factors on risk of dementia, cognitive decline, metabolic health, depression and mortality; and (2) impact of psychosocial factors (social support, work stress, and depressive symptoms) on progression of coronary heart disease.

Life course psychosocial factors and early signs of dementia

Identification of the risk factors that predict early signs of Alzheimer's disease and related dementia and the underlying mechanisms may lead to the identification and development of effective personalized preventive strategies that can protect against cognitive dysfunction.

Brain structure and functional connectivity later in life

Are brain structure and functional connectivity later in life influenced by midlife psychosocial work stress? Psychosocial stress at work has been suggested to play a role in the development of cognitive dysfunction, but evidence on the neural substrate (brain structure and function) of psychosocial work stress is scarce.

Growing older, working longer: the role of working conditions

Prolonging working lives is an important means to promote healthy aging and the sustainable development, thus is a high priority on the agenda of policy makers. Understanding workplace factors in shaping a longer working life appears as a frontier issue.
