The research area is focused on sleep and recovery associated with stress. The main idea is that stress/load gives long-term effects only when recovery is disturbed.

About me

Sleep is a complex biological phenomenon that dynamically adapts to homeostatic needs and stressors. Its function(s) is one of the largest riddles within biology, but many research groups are working around the clock, assuring that we can look forward to many exciting discoveries. Our team is presently investigating the biological and cultural influences - such as living in the modern 24-hours society with peculiarities such as night work and artificial lighting - on how we sleep and the consequences thereof.

Our research team at the Stress Research Institute aims to increase the knowledge and awareness of how sleep in the modern life affects our biology, cognition and health. Some of the research questions we pursue include:

- How sleep loss affects the brain and why some are more vulnarable than others?

- How fast can you start trust an awakening brain?

- How do parents to young children sleep and what can be done to support them?

- Can more sleep speed up recovery from infections?

Too tired to know?

Insufficient sleep has negative effects on several cognitive abilities, but little is known about the extent to which sleep-deprived people are aware of their own impairments.

Working hours, health and security - how to organize a sustainable shift schedule?

Shift work is an important work environment factor that contributes to work-related ill health and mortality. To reduce work-related ill-health and mortality, it is important to design shift schedules that meet our need for recovery, do not interfere more than necessary in social life, and reduce circadian rhythm disturbances.
