Julia Englander

My research examines political violence, persecution, and social mobilization, with a particular focus on Holocaust and genocide studies, war and conflict, and violent extremism, terrorism, and racism. I am particularly interested in the causes, dynamics, and consequences of political violence, as well as in how experiences of violence and persecution are interpreted, represented, and given meaning over time. My work lies at the intersection of political history, memory studies, and the study of violence and conflict.

I also engage in policy-oriented research and have authored reports for the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (Brå) and for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

I have held research fellowships at Harvard University, the University of Oxford, Charles University, and the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam. I am the recipient of the 2025 Emerging Scholar Prize from the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) and the 2023 Intercultural Scholarship Award from the Swedish Women's Educational Association (SWEA). I currently serve on the Early Career Editorial Board of the International Journal of Intercultural Relations.
