Network Language and Power

Language and power as a field of study has a long tradition, but it has become more relevant in recent years due to the rise of populism and societies becoming increasingly polarised.

About me

I am a postdoctoral researcher and senior lecturer in Finnish with an interest in political discourse and the power of language in society. In August 2024, I defended my doctoral thesis at Stockholm University. My thesis, “Rajanvetoja ja vastakkainasetteluja: Diskursiiviset strategiat suomalaisten poliitikkojen blogiteksteissä vaalivuonna 2015” (Drawing borders and generating opposites: Discursive strategies in Finnish politicians’ blog texts during the election year 2015) deals with confrontational language use and populist strategies in Finnish politicians’ blog texts.

In my postdoctoral project, I study the security policy discourses of Finland and Sweden in the spring of 2022, when the countries decided to apply for membership in the NATO military alliance. The project focuses in particular on how security (turvallisuus in Finnish, säkerhet in Swedish) and related concepts (such as trygghet, ‘safety’) were defined and used during the NATO debates. In this way, the project aims to generate new knowledge about linguistic strategies in the countries’ changing security policy discourses and contribute to the understanding of the linguistic choices that influenced the rapid decisions on the NATO application.

Previously, I have taught courses in Finnish at the basic and advanced levels. During the spring term of 2026, I teach the course Finnish as a Foreign Language III (sub-courses Scientific Writing, 7.5 credits, and Oral Communication, 7.5 credits).
