About me

Professor

Director Gösta Ekman's Laboratory

My research focuses on perception and cognition. I am particularly interested in the cognitive aspects of the sense of smell and how our olfactory functions work in various clinical groups. Several of my projects have contributed to understanding autobiographical smell memories and why our memories of smells often originate from our childhood. Another important focus is how the sense of smell changes with aging and why early stages of dementia often involve significant olfactory impairments and anosmia. From 2015 to 2020, I led the research program "Our Unique Sense of Smell," funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond. The program involved numerous national and international researchers.

After earning my Ph.D. in 1997 at the Karolinska Institute, I have been employed at Uppsala University and Stockholm University. For one year, I was a research fellow at the Centre for Advanced Study at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (CAS) in Oslo. Since April 2009, I have been a professor in perception and psychophysics at the Department of Psychology. I primarily teach and supervise in cognitive and perceptual psychology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

I am a member of the board of the Stockholm Brain Imaging Centre (SUBIC) and the board of the Stockholm University Psychological Clinic (SUPK).

Since 2019, I have been a member of the board of the Stiftelsen Natur och Kultur.
