SciLifeLab, Science for Life Laboratory, is a joint venture between Stockholm University, Karolinska Institutet, KTH, and Uppsala University. The operation started in 2010 with the aim of gathering the universities’ research in biosciences. There are two SciLifeLab sites: one at Karolinska Institutet in Solna, and one in Uppsala.

The vice-chancellors of Karolinska Institutet, KTH, and Stockholm University have appointed Mats Nilsson, professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Stockholm University and researcher at SciLifeLab, the Site Director of SciLifeLab in Stockholm with responsibility for the research environment.

“I want to make SciLifeLab in Stockholm an attractive place to work for top researchers from Sweden and other countries, and a good host for national research platforms. This collaboration between several universities is an attractive place to work. This is particularly noticeable in the many applications we recently received from prominent young researchers following our announcement of new positions,” says Mats Nilsson.

Mats Nilsson holds a PhD in medical genetics from Uppsala University and was recruited to SciLifeLab in 2012. He is a professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Stockholm University. His primary research focuses on molecular analysis with the aim of finding better methods to diagnose infectious diseases and cancer. Mats Nilsson will continue to do 50% research, while acting as site director for the remaining 50%.
