Research project How problematic are they? - Assessing the Toxicity of Airborne Nanoparticles from Airports and the Associated Health Risks
Airborne nanoparticles may be particularly harmful to human health. In this project, we will evaluate how the toxicity of nanoparticles at airports compares with those emitted from other transport-related sources.
Air pollution can have negative effects on people’s health. Compared to other air pollutants, we still know very little about the smallest airborne particles, so-called nanoparticles. These particles can for example be emitted from different types of transportation. In this project, we will evaluate how harmful airport nanoparticles are to people’s health in comparison with nanoparticles emitted from other transport-related sources such as e.g. car and rail traffic.
To do this, we will measure the concentrations of nanoparticles in airport air and also collect those particles to investigate their composition and toxicity. We can then compare this toxicity with that of previously measured nanoparticles from other sources. In addition, we will evaluate previous epidemiological studies, which have looked into how airport emissions correlate with the occurrence of various diseases.
