Research project TALENTS: Towards Artificial Intelligence Empowered Green Internet of Things

TALENTS unites academic and industry experts to develop sustainable, energy-autonomous IoT solutions for continuous water quality monitoring. We work with energy harvesting, efficient communication, TinyML, cloud AI and researcher training.

TALENTS will develop sustainable and intelligent Internet of Things (IoT) solutions for continuous water quality monitoring. The project combines energy harvesting, low-power communication and artificial intelligence (AI) to create sensor systems that can operate for long periods with limited maintenance.

Energy from sunlight, heat and mechanical movement will power connected devices, while energy-aware scheduling and prediction methods will help them use resources efficiently. TinyML models will support data analysis directly on the devices, while cloud-based AI will enable large-scale processing and decision support. These technologies will make water monitoring more reliable, affordable and environmentally friendly, especially where maintenance or access to electricity is difficult.

TALENTS brings together universities, research organizations and companies from Europe and Pakistan. Through joint research, training and knowledge exchange, the project will strengthen expertise, support innovation and improve career opportunities for researchers.

Energy harvesting, Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have seen significant growth in recent years and are considered key enablers for next-generation wireless technologies. The convergence of these technologies will enable the development of intelligent and sustainable IoT that can offer numerous benefits such as optimized application performance, reduced maintenance costs and minimized environmental impact.

In this context, TALENTS project aims to bring together experts and researchers from both academic and non-academic sectors (including SMEs) from Sweden, Ireland, Greece, Croatia, Serbia and Pakistan to co-develop novel, sustainable and intelligent IoT based solutions for continuous water quality monitoring.

TALENTS project will focus on developing novel and practical technological solutions including efficient, robust and low-cost energy harvesters (solar, thermal and mechanical), EH aware task scheduling, energy prediction models, communication protocols, resource-efficient AI models, including TinyML for on-device computation and cloud-based AI for large-scale data analytics.

By integrating these components, TALENTS will advance the state-of-the-art in sustainable, energy-autonomous IoT based water monitoring systems. Also, the project will make a positive impact by providing excellent and equal training opportunities for researchers enhancing their scientific expertise, networking capacities, and transferable skills to foster sustainable career development.
