The research profile of Old Norse religion includes an interdisciplinary approach, where several different source categories are studied.
All researchers working within the profile are philologically educated and have the written sources as a basis for their studies. In addition, archaeological material, place-names and runic inscriptions are also studied to varying degrees, with relevant methods. There are researchers within the profile who also examine the Old Norse religion from an Indo-European perspective. A recurring approach in our research is that the Old Norse religion is related to the Iron Age culture and society. Myths, rites and symbols are thus studied in a cultural-historical context.
