Research in this field concerns language use and language learning from a multilingual perspective. A key issue is what it means to learn a new language expressed in a different modality.
Since the start of the 1980s, this research has mainly focused on describing similarities and differences between deaf and hearing second language learners. Much of the research has been conducted in close cooperation with the Swedish Special Schools for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
We are currently researching:
- the second language acquisition of Swedish in the deaf and hard of hearing with Swedish Sign Language as L1
- the acquisition of Swedish and Swedish Sign Language in deaf immigrants
- second-language acquisition of Swedish Sign Language
- how deaf and hard of hearing people use their bilingualism when communicating in groups or in teaching.
We also provide courses in Swedish as a second language for the deaf.
