Research on modern and contemporary literature extends from around 1800 to the present day. It includes poetry as well as drama and prose.

Stockholm University has a large number of researchers working on literature from around 1800 to the present day. Both modernity, modernism and contemporary literature are represented. Research on Swedish literature during this period is dominant and ranges from, for example, the modernist Elin Wägner, Pär Lagerkvist, Edith Södergran, Artur Lundkvist and August Strindberg to more contemporary authors such as Birgitta Trotzig, Lars Norén and Sara Stridsberg.

But there are also several researchers working on literature from other languages and countries, such as European and American modernism; Stéphane Mallarmé, Marcel Proust and Thomas Mann and Gertrud Stein. More contemporary research on literature from other language areas also includes projects on Latin American exile literature, Caribbean literature and American contemporary prose.
