Intersectionality, Identity, and the Illusion of Meritocracy in Science. A seminar in the Seminar Series on Gender, Gender Equality, and Natural Sciences.

Dr. Carolina Vidor, personal archive.

In this hybrid seminar, Dr. Carolina Vidor draws on her multidisciplinary trajectory across medical physics, engineering, and education to explore how identity, privilege, and discrimination intersect in scientific careers. Reflecting on her experiences as a (Brazilian, white, cisgender, heterosexual) woman in science, she situates her story within broader power structures that can ease the way for some while excluding others. Her talk challenges the illusion of meritocracy that often dominates scientific culture. Participants will be invited to reflect on their own trajectories, considering how fluidity and context shape the intersections of identity, power, and opportunity. The seminar opens up a conversation about how science could become more inclusive and diverse by unpacking the unspoken rules and expectations that determine who is seen, who is heard, and who belongs within academic and professional contexts.

No prior knowledge of gender or diversity research is needed—everyone curious about science and how to make it more inclusive is welcome!

The Seminar Series on Gender, Gender Equality, and Natural Sciences is part of the Gender Academy at Stockholm University.
