Seminar on Gender, Gender Equality, and Natural Sciences: Outsider Within
Seminar
Date: Thursday 13 November 2025
Time: 15.00 – 16.30
Location: Zoom
"Combining Design Research and Feminist Research for Investigating and Transforming Design Museums" with Dr. Anja Neidhardt-Mokoena.
In this online Seminar, Dr. Anja Neidhardt-Mokoena will provide some insights into her PhD research project, which combines design research and feminist research. Thinking with feminist standpoint theory, she will reflect on the challenges and advantages that can come with being an “outsider within”: Feminist researchers are often part of professional communities and simultaneously members of at least one oppressed group, which gives us the possibility to learn to see and formulate aspects that are invisible to those who are only insiders. As a PhD candidate at Umeå University (2019–2024), both at the Institute of Design and at the Centre for Gender Studies, she navigated the challenges of being an insider and an outsider in many ways: a feminist in design research, a qualitative scholar in a faculty of science and technology, and a design researcher in gender studies.
The seminar will be divided into three parts: First, Anja will give an overview of her PhD research and its key themes. Then, she will share some reflections on the relation between the design discipline and systems of oppression, and recent developments in design research that apply feminist approaches. In part three, she will talk about developing a feminist design methodology, what it consists of, and how it might be inspirational also for other fields.

This is a seminar in the Gender Academy Seminar Series on Gender, Gender Equality and Natural Sciences.
