Environmental isotopes (18O, 13C in water and organic matter) are among the best indicators of past climate variations, but disentangling the combined influence of temperature, precipitation and trajectories is far from trivial. We therefore apply a hierarchy of models (e.g. ECHAMiso, REMOiso, JSBACHiso, LPJ) for the atmosphere and land-surface to represent the water and carbon cycle over various scales in time and space. Our aim is to establish a physically consistent interpretation of the isotopic proxies (ice and lake sediment cores, tree-rings, speleothems). We focus primarily over the high latitudes (Scandinavia, Canada) during the last millennium, later to be expanded to the Holocene.
