Liam is working with Jonas Nycander and Johan Nilsson on eddying flows in the Arctic Ocean. Observations in recent decades show the presence of swirling vortices of fluid in the interior of the Arctic Ocean. Liam is trying to improve our understanding of how these vortices are initially formed and how they are eventually destroyed. Following on from this, they will be trying to ascertain whether these vortices affect the larger Arctic climate and ecosystem by transporting heat, fresh water and nutrients around the basin.
