Avocados have become a fashionable food with a rising global demand that drives international trade. The fruit’s popularity in the Global North is driven by its touted health benefits and its indulgent flavor and consistency. However, the emphasis on the construction of avocados as a “trendy food” obscures how massive consumption patterns transform the places and the lives of people in the Global South who make production possible. My dissertation explores the diverse experiences of peasant farmers who engage with avocado farming in Colombia, where the growing cultivation of this fruit has positioned the country as the world’s second-largest producer after Mexico. I focus on the municipality of Cajamarca (Tolima), where the boom is rapidly expanding via cultivation by smallholder peasants and the establishment of corporate plantations. In this seminar, I will present a chapter of my dissertation that delves into how peasants narrate the contested environmental impacts of the avocado boom. Here, I pay special attention to how the boom transforms their relation to nature and the different ways in which they construct themselves as environmental subjects in this process.
