The school in Sweden is supposed to be equal, but where children and young people live and which school they attend has become of decisive importance for their opportunities to reach the national knowledge requirements. Two schools that break this pattern piqued the researchers' curiosity.

Biodiversity dilemmas in ordinary places

The aim of the project has been to investigate the political discussions about, and the bureaucratic handling of, Swedish drug abuse treatment during the years 2001-2015.

By doing analyzes focusing on time from education to job, length of employment spells, and career patterns, we shed light on changes for birth cohorts born from the 1940s and onwards. Our analyses are based on register data and the occupational biographies in the Level of Living Surveys.

The Historical Data Archive (H-DATA) is a hub of historical country-level data going as far back as the French revolution or even further and offers unparalleled depth of data and temporality, enabling researchers to answer critical questions about the past but to also understand the origins of, and find historical parallels to, present-day problems.

Research shows that one's health and illness-related identity is decisive for which health-promoting, disease-preventing and rehabilitative measures the individual performs. How people perceive themselves in the sense of I'm healthy, I'm sick etc. thus appears as an important basis for people's future health.

Why do young people use psychoactive substances? Has substance use been normalized or is it still abnormal? Knowledge of this is needed for society to be able to understand and handle changes in consumption and attitudes that have been observed at an aggregate level in recent years.

Medical devices collect huge sets of patient data every day, at every hospital, around the world. What if these data could be used to improve diagnostic tools? This PhD thesis project explores how medical data can be used in a safe way.

This project explores the prevalence of intensive parenting norms in Sweden and their implications for childbearing, well-being and work trajectories, as well as differences in the nature of the norms across social and demographic groups.

School is a context of central importance in young people's lives, and also an environment that can contribute to shaping behaviour.

Segregation typically refers to the clustering of certain groups in residential areas, schools, or workplaces. But segregation is intimately related to how people interact with one another. This project thus considers segregation from the angle: access to urban amenities that promote social interactions, and their effect on integration.

The six year research programme Sivin-Child (Coordinated intervention systems against violence in close relationships), explores how different aspects of social work, from detection and investigation to support and follow-up can be coordinated.

Increased rates of immigration have led to rising concerns about integration in Europe. Social ties are often argued to promote integration by helping immigrants locate work and housing.

Project aim: to investigate whether indicators of “effective schools” is linked to students’ school performance and psychological health, and also explore ‘contrasting contexts’ to the Swedish school setting.

As the Nordic population ages, there is a need to look at differences between different groups that arise as a result of how our health and care systems look.

The purpose of this project is to assess the unintended health consequences of Sweden’s parental leave policy, while addressing the interplay between parental leave use and health, both before and after childbearing.

This project brings more nuance to the history of suffrage in Sweden. As history is usually written, 1921 marks the end of the struggle for suffrage. But rather than regarding the reform of 1921 as a definitive democratic breakthrough, the research project examines the events of the following century as a continuing but non-linear process of democratisation.

Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) is an unique approach to conceptualizing and measuring democracy. They provide a multidimensional and disaggregated dataset that reflects the complexity of the concept of democracy as a system of rule that goes beyond the simple presence of elections.

Recent developments in AI affect us in many ways, also in higher education. The research project "WASP-ED work area 4: Pedagogical development and learning analytics" is a part of the national WASP-ED program which aims to increase AI capability and capacity in Sweden.

The project "Who decides on a child's health care? An interdisciplinary study on the child's right to participation in decisions concerning care and treatment" explores how the interaction between children, custodians and health care staff affects children's right to participation, determination and integrity in their own health care.

The project "Why Do Working Class Voters Support the Populist Radical Right? A Mixed-Methods Study of a Changing Political Landscape in Sweden" explores the relationship between class politics and support for the populist radical right.

Understanding the mechanisms leading to young people drinking less than the generations before holds implications for approaches to reducing alcohol consumption at the population level in an ongoing way. The project is focuses attention on individual, developmental and social factors of all adolescents, including light drinkers and those who do not drink.

It is currently estimated that there are up to 300 000 Kenyan citizens working in the Gulf states on temporary contracts. Conditions for women domestic workers are particularly harsh. Reports of physical, psychological and sexual violence are frequent.

The aim of this project is to examine young adults’ educational and life careers in areas that are perceived as culturally and economically disadvantaged and how their educational and life careers can be enhanced.
