Research project EUROMOD National Team

In this project, we functioned as the Swedish National team providing input to EUROMOD. EUROMOD is a European tax-benefit simulation model. The input we provided pertained to policy knowledge, preparation of micro-data and programming of the Swedish tax-benefit system.

The Swedish Institute for Social Research has a long history of doing country-comparative research on social policy, from a multidisciplinary perspective (including, but not limited to, sociology, social policy, political sciences, and economics). Based on this expertise, we completed the following deliverables and activities:

  1. Input micro-data update. This includes coordinating with EUROstat regarding the EMSD content, preparing the do-files specific to Sweden, generate the EUROMOD input data, and provide the documentation in terms of country reports.
  2. Documenting policy rules. The team will update the information on policy rules in Sweden and document these in the country report for Sweden.
  3. Implementing policy rules in EUROMOD, including implementation of uprating indexes and micro-validation.
  4. Documenting and testing of the model. This includes a revision and maintenance of documented guidelines macro-validation based on key-indicators and checking for consistency of the Swedish policy model across years.
  5. Production of key indicators, including the calculation and validation of marginal effective tax rates, distributional effects of policy changes, input for the policy effects report, and three statistical outputs. These indicators will be shared for internal and external feedback and updated / document as relevant.
  6. Additional activities include updating previous datasets where necessary, correcting errors in the previous version of EUROMOD for Sweden, and active participation in the project’s annual meeting.
