Research project Educational segregation in Sweden: dynamics, mechanisms and effects

The overall objective of this program is to study educational segregation in Sweden in the light of three major phenomena during the past 30 years: far-reaching school reforms, immigration, and women starting to dominate men in educational outcomes.

This apparently broad research agenda has two common themes: (1) Educational segregation, which in this project is defined to span inequality of outcomes between schools, school segregation (w.r.t immigrant background; ability; gender), and segregation in educational choices between women and men; (2) The associations between major phenomena (far-reaching school reforms; immigration; women starting to dominate men in educational outcomes) and educational segregation over long periods of time.

The project will thus study educational segregation in different dimensions during an era of substantial changes to the education sector, and it aims to shed light on this issue at different levels: at compulsory school, high-school and at the tertiary level of education. The purpose is to examine the dynamics, mechanisms and effects of educational segregation by conducting four independent studies based on Swedish population-wide registry data. The project aims to contribute with new insights about educational segregation by using novel approaches and addressing questions that we currently have limited knowledge about.
