Research group Network for the study of emotions

The newly started network for the study of emotions creates interdisciplinary and cross-faculty meetings for researchers who, based on different theories and methods, work with the study of emotions.

It is coordinated from the Department of Culture and Aesthetics, but includes researchers from all over SU, as well as nationally and internationally. It mainly brings together researchers in the humanities and social sciences, but also welcomes researchers in psychology, behavioural sciences, natural sciences, medicine and health sciences.

Anyone interested in joining the network can email to (please include all three addresses):

Workshops

Our next workshop will take place on Tuesday 14 October 2025, 15:00 – 17:00 at the Department of Culture and Aesthetics, in the Manne Siegbahn Buildings. It will take the form of an afternoon text seminar with fika. We will discuss a chapter from Lisa Feldman Barrett’s How Emotions are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain (2017). Feldman Barrett, a very influential but also contested Canadian-American psychologist, has appeared several times in our discussions in the network as she challenges the notion of universal basic emotions, and instead proposes that emotions are socially constructed.

To participate, please send an email to sara.ekstrom@idehist.su.se before 7 October.

Details about the workshop

18 March 2025 the network arranged a workshop with keynote speaker psychologist Disa Sauter, University of Amsterdam. The workshop also featureed a multidisciplinary panel on methodology in the study of emotions.
