A new study from Swedish Institute for Social Research (SOFI) puts a piece to the puzzle on why girls don’t seem to aim for the science and technology fields in their education and work careers.

Wallenberg Academy Fellow Karin Lind is combining modern technology with recently developed models to study the very oldest stars in the Milky Way, and create a picture of the childhood of the galaxy.

The aim of this project is to understand extremal properties of eigenfunctions of certain differential operators in mathematical physics.

Connections in spatial growth models

One of the most important avenues of research in mathematical physics evolves around a differential equation, introduced by physicists Kardar, Parisi and Zhang. This equation has in empirical studies been found to describe the evolution, over time, of the front of various spatial growth processes, such as bacteria colonies and flame fronts.

Generic vanishing and characterization of semi-abelian varieties

This is a project in algebraic geometry, the branch of mathematics which studies geometric objects arising from algebraic ones, such as solutions of polynomial equations. The proposal revolves around a central theme within algebraic geometry: the classification problem.

Optimal calibration of questions in computerized achievement tests

Achievement tests to evaluate abilities of examinees become increasingly important and are used by decision makers. Several large tests are repeated periodically, for example the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test, national tests in school, and international tests PISA and TIMSS.

The importance of the MEP pathway in the microbiome and its effect on behavior

Our main aim is to study the effects of bacterial phosphoantigens (HMBPP and IPP) on appetite. We introduced these into mice by gavage and followed the differences in weight gain and gene transcription from relevant tissues. An unexpected effect on male salivary glands focused our interest also on their effects on immune response.
