Leading interpreter-mediated professional encounters is a highly specialized skill. However, training in tis skill is almost nonexistent in professional education. This project explores how students develop this skill through interprofessional role-plays. The theoretical and methodological framework is based on mediated discourse analysis.

Interpreter-mediated professional encounters occur countless times daily, requiring collaboration between public service providers and interpreters. Managing the interprofessional collaboration in such encounters is a highly specialized skill, yet training for this is nearly absent in professional educational programs. This project examines a cross-disciplinary educational initiative where students from interpreter programs collaborate with social work, medical, and police students to practice interpreter-mediated professional encounters. The exercises are based om joint role-plays where each group acts in the role of their future profession—interpreters, social workers, doctors, and investigators. The initiative is an example of interprofessional learning aimed at fostering learning from, about, and with one another. The theoretical and methodological framework is based on mediated discourse analysis, focusing on the relationship between discourse and action.
