Strengthening environmental expertise through work-integrated learning
The Department of Environmental Science is introducing a new approach to environmental sciences education, one that brings students closer to the real-world challenges of the field.
By combining coursework with hands-on experience, the course package in Environment and Health offers a unique opportunity to engage with industry professionals and public sector experts throughout the learning process.
Developed in collaboration with Miljösamverkan Stockholms län—a regional initiative involving 26 municipalities, the County Administrative Board of Stockholm, and Storsthlm—the course package allows students to apply their knowledge directly in the workplace from the first week of their studies. With opportunities to work up to 15 hours per week at municipal environmental offices, participants gain early exposure to the complexities of environmental regulation and public health initiatives.
The initiative comes at a time when demand for environmental- and health inspectors in Sweden far outstrips the supply. Graduates will be well-positioned for careers in both public and private sectors, equipped with practical experience and industry connections.
The course package is available exclusively in Swedish and is tailored for students with a background in natural sciences. As McLachlan explains, "By integrating education with work, we demonstrate our department’s commitment to engaging with stakeholders and providing education that addresses pressing societal needs."
Application to the course package opens on 17 March.
