Hungary sets a new tone for the EU presidency slogan

The European Union has seen a variety of slogans from its member states holding the presidency of the Council of the EU through the years, ranging from "One Europe", "We need more Europe" to "rEUnite." As Hungary assumed the presidency on July 1, 2024, it picked the phrase "Make Europe Great Again”, thus echoing former U.S. President Trump's old campaign slogan.

It could be referred to as “nation branding”, Niklas Bremberg, Assistant Professor in Political Science at Stockholm University, explained to Swedish public service broadcaster SVT in early July.

Adding that:

“You try to link the presidency to an image you want to convey of the country”.
