NILAs research seminar - Gabriel Arce-Rollins Riocabo, Ph.D. from CUNY-Graduate Center who researches documentary film and Latin American intellectual history
The Cuban Revolution was a transnational phenomenon integral to the so-called “Global 60s.” But what did this local and global event look like from Scandinavia? This lecture traces the largely forgotten trajectories of Danish documentarian Theodor Christensen, who directed Cuba’s first film school, and Swedish critic and translator Artur Lundkvist, key to shaping the global image of Latin-American literature through the Nobel Prize. To what degree did they represent a peculiarly ‘Scandinavian’ logic, peripheral to Cold War polarities and the politically “committed” intellectual? Through what circuitous processes did they help shape a ‘world-image’ with Havana in the foreground in places like Buenos Aires, New York, and Paris, where their work—Christensen’s film Ella (1964) or Lundkvist’s travelog Så Lever Kuba (1965)—remained unknown?
The research seminar on Latin American studies is open to scholars interested in Latin American issues. It welcomes the presentation of papers from researchers and PhD students from different social science disciplines. The seminar takes place on Fridays 14:00 – 15:30 every second week (odd numbers) at the Library of the Institute of Latin American Studies (House B, Floor 5).
